As you already know, our department has 3 main research groups: Micro/ Behavioral/Experimental, Macro, Applied & Econometrics. Each student is assigned to one of the research groups and projects.
In the first year, follow the EIDUA calendar for PhD: around September you apply for the registration (Inscripcion). Actual registration (Matricula) is carried out around November.
Also following Procedure Calendar (Obligaciones Doctorando):
you will need to fill RAPI around May (you can find it in uacloud), you can ask me or other colleagues to share a template of the document to be filled in RAPI. It is a research statement, progress, plans, etc. Note that once RAPI is finished, you need to change the status to “En Revision” for your supervisor to review the document.
sign doctoral commitment (Compromiso Doctoral) You will be sent a calendar for a yearly progress review with a director of the PhD program (Around May-June). Those are short presentations regarding research activity you have performed through out the year.
Actividades formativas (You will have to find a calendar for those, typically they are online activities around February-May)
Also you will be asked to fill an additional document with yearly progress review including attended internal and external seminars (you can request this list from the secretary of the PhD program) Note that you are expected to talk to speakers invited for internal seminars. So you will have to list speakers you have talked to through out the year.
If you are accepted into PhD there are generally two ways to be funded: Ayudante contracts and grants:
Typically one of the advantages of obtaining a grant is that the duration is 4 years since the beginning of your PhD. Regional and university grants pay less than government grant and ayudante contracts. Note that the amount you will see as a yearly compensation is not equal to what you will receive, roughly deduct 20% of the amount (la cuota empresarial de la Seguridad Social de los investigadores).
Some recommendations to find conferences and workshops: conferencemaker, inomics, Twitter :’)
PhD students have 600 EUR allowance for conferences. Please contact our administrative officer Josefa, to consult proof of expenditures and other details for reimbursement. Note that each student is assigned to a research group, and a corresponding grant. The expenditures on conferences are not limited to 600 EUR given the approval of the head of the research project.
UA is a part of Xarxa Vives d’Universitats and you can use DRAC Oficina de Movilidad to finance those. Note that you have to apply for DRAC before attending the conference. It covers limited travel, accommodation and registration costs. Note that when you apply for a conference, in order to be reimbursed by DRAC, the invoice (factura) has to be in your name, not the University’s name.
For conferences out of Spain, you can use PPI of UA.
Each research group project has its criteria on courses for reimbursement. Consult our kind administrative staff that can point you to the document with the criteria. You can either ask your supervisor or ask directly the head of the research grant to approve the course you would want to attend and be reimbursed. Of course you are free to attend any courses you want when financed privately.
